Lagoa awards Maria Barroso Prize to Maria Teresa Couceiro Pizarro Beauty

The award is a biennial initiative of the Câmara de Lagoa

Maria Teresa Couceiro Pizarro Beauty won the second edition of the Maria Barroso Award, promoted by the Municipality of Lagoa, for her dedication and work in the area of ​​defending gender equality, fighting for human rights, equal society and active citizenship.

This award is a biennial initiative, promoted by the Câmara de Lagoa, which aims to «distinguish relevant actions of women and men who, individually or institutionally, have contributed to the construction of an egalitarian society that promotes active citizenship, the equality of gender, non-discrimination and respect for human rights”.

 

 

It can be awarded to a person residing in Portugal or to a private or non-profit collective institution based in Portugal, respecting the majority of the votes of the members of the jury.

In the 1st edition, the award was given to Maria do Céu Cunha Rego, a jurist with professional and civic work in the field of gender equality, migration and support to Portuguese communities abroad.

In the 2nd edition, by unanimous decision, the Maria Barroso Prize was awarded to Maria Teresa Couceiro Pizarro Beleza, «recognizing her action in the fight for human rights, dedicated to research and teaching in the areas of Criminal Law, Criminology, Criminal Procedure and Women's Law , having created the discipline of Women's Law and Social Equality in the degree in Law, for the first time in 1998».

«With this award and with good practices in the integration of the gender equality dimension, Lagoa sets the example and encourages its partners to follow good practices in this matter, whether in the areas of sport, culture, social action or business level», said Luís Encarnação, Mayor of Lagoa.
