High Commissioner for Migration visited intercultural initiatives in Portimão

Sónia Pereira went to the Portimão Museum and visited the Cruz da Parteira district

Sónia Pereira, High Commissioner for Migration and President of the Board of Directors of the High Commission for Migration, was in Portimão this Friday, where she visited  the exhibition “We are all colors”, by Hein Semk, on display at the Municipal Museum, and the collaborative mural “Interculturalities” that is being painted in Bairro da Cruz da Parteira by local artists Tars8two and APC from LAC- Laboratório de Trabalhos Criativas.

On this visit, which marked the International Day for Cultural Diversity and the start of the Intercultural Week in Portimão, Sónia Pereira took the opportunity and the delegation that accompanied her took the opportunity «to also visit the Cruz da Mideira Community Center, where on the 26th and 28th the awareness-raising action “As Cores da Cidade Cinzenta”, inspired by the homonymous book by Rita Garcia Fernandes and aimed at the children of this social district, where different cultures coexist and which has deserved an important social intervention work to raise awareness by the municipality in the sense of acceptance of the culture of the other”, according to the City Council of Portimão.

The Municipality of Portimão «is one of the four Portuguese intercultural cities that are part of the international commemorative campaign launched by ICC – Intercultural Cities“ Feel Diversity-revive your senses”, which makes known the cultural diversity of its members».

«Portimão is part of this map of intercultural cities as a municipality that increasingly assumes itself as the holder of an eclectic and diverse population, with more than six dozen foreign communities living and working in the municipality, which justifies the promotion of the Intercultural Week , which will run until 29 May», illustrated the municipality.

The initiative “aims to raise awareness among people from Portimão about the importance of a fairer, more egalitarian and intercultural society, and is part of the agenda of activities of CLAIM Portimão – Local Center for Support and Integration of Migrants, which is committed to an inclusion policy for bem welcome those who seek this tolerant and supportive city».

Sónia Pereira was accompanied on this visit by José Reis, member of the Board of Directors of the High Commission, by Gonçalo Salgado, coordinator of CNAIM Algarve (National Center for Support to the Integration of Migrants - ‎High Commission for Migration) and by Flávia Tourinho, coordinator of CNAIM social support and inclusion offices. Teresa Mendes, councilor of the Portimão Council, was the one who received the delegation.
