Águas do Algarve participates in a project nominated for the "Life Awards"

The results will be announced during the EU Green Week 2021 virtual conference

The company Águas do Algarve is participating in the project “Improving current barriers for the control of pharmaceutical compounds in urban wastewater treatment plants” (2016-2019), which is one of the five finalists competing for the LIFE Environment 2021 award, awarded by the European Commission.

The project, which is coordinated by the National Civil Engineering Laboratory, is also one of the 15 nominees for the Citizen of Life Award, voted on by the general public.

“This nomination recognizes the high innovation potential of this project, which has demonstrated how to improve the control of pharmaceutical compounds in urban wastewater treatment, with low-investment, low-energy solutions, and how to develop high-performance absorbents, tailored for products. target pharmacists», says Águas do Algarve.

The awards awarded by the European Commission are part of the LIFE program which finances projects in the area of ​​environment and climate action.

The research work focusing on wastewater took place between 2016 and 2019, and was carried out by a multidisciplinary consortium constituted by the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (coordination), Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, FFUL, University of Algarve, Empresa Portuguesa das Águas Livres (EPAL), Águas do Algarve, Águas do Tejo Atlântico and Environment and Regional Development Consulting.

The choice of the “LIFE Citizens' Prize” is made through free online voting in progress until 2 June. The format of this distinction allows the public to vote for their preferred environmental project.
