Portimão declares itself “LGBTIQ Freedom Zone”

Portimão was the second municipality nationally to take this initiative

Portimão has been, since yesterday, an “LGBTIQ Freedom Zone”. The proposal by João Vasconcelos, councilor of the Left Bloc, was unanimously approved this Wednesday, April 7, at the Chamber meeting.

In a note sent to the editorial offices, the Bloco de Esquerda council emphasizes that Portimão was «the second municipality to take this initiative at national level, after Lisbon did it on March 18th».

The same deliberation also condemned the action of the governments of Poland and Hungary for allowing the creation of the so-called “LGBTIQ ideology-free zones”.

As the blocists explain, “these initiatives come after the European Parliament approved a Resolution on March 11 declaring the European Union as “LGBTIQ Freedom Zone”, following the adoption of repressive measures and discrimination against these communities by governments of Poland and Hungary'.

On March 30, the Assembly of the Republic also approved a vote of condemnation for the creation of free zones for LGBTIQ citizens in Poland and Hungary, which goes against the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the European Convention on Human Rights, the Charter of Rights Fundamentals of the European Union and the Treaty of Lisbon.
