Operation “Senhores da Terra” holds 7 people for property ownership in the Algarve

In total, in addition to seven arrests, 18 defendants were constituted and 12 properties were seized

Seven people were arrested this Tuesday, April 27, on suspicion of engaging in the "fraudulent" appropriation of rural and urban buildings in the Eastern Algarve. The operation “Senhores da Terra” involved 20 house searches and a notary office.

According to the Judiciary Police (PJ), this group of people “illegitimately used the legal institute of “usucapião””.

According to TVI, in addition to several businessmen, one of the detainees also includes a notary.

“Entrepreneurs identified several vacant properties, without the owners, and in collusion with the notary managed to register the properties in his name. Once the properties were registered in the suspects' names, they quickly sold them at a profit of 100 percent,” says TVI.

The investigation under investigation "aims to investigate the authorship and outlines of criminal offenses, which have allowed, so far, to identify 25 properties, presumably usurped by the suspects to their legitimate owners", says, in turn, the PJ.

In total, in addition to seven arrests, 18 defendants were constituted and 12 properties were seized, but «it is accepted that more similar situations will be detected».

The detainees will be brought to court for enforcement of the coercive measures.

This operation “Senhores da Terra” involved the Criminal Investigation Department of Portimão and the GNR, in an inquiry directed by the Criminal Investigation Department (DIAP) of Faro.
