Lagos took 7th place at the international level in the “Public Choice” category of the Green Destinations, after being included in the 100 best sustainable destinations in the world to visit, by Good Travel Guide.
This is the only Algarve municipality to appear in the Top 10, occupying the 7th place at the international level and the 2nd place at the national level. The list includes three more Portuguese destinations: Alto Minho CIM, Arouca and Dark Sky Alqueva.
The platform Green Destinations «It annually recognizes destinations that have implemented successful strategies for a more sustainable tourism, through a panel of independent evaluators that analyze criteria such as health, accessibility, environment, safety and sustainability», according to the Câmara de Lagos.
This year, the ceremony that distinguishes these more sustainable tourist destinations «focused on the pandemic and on how they managed to overcome the difficulties arising from it, having inaugurated the category “People's Choice/Public Choice”, through a vote that ended in early March».
"This recognition, by the public, highlights the various strategies of the municipality with regard to environmental sustainability, ensuring a more environmentally friendly tourist destination, with a view to valuing its natural resources", concludes the municipality.
The international Top 10 is headed by Bitez (Turkey), Bison Land (Romania) and Futaleufú (Chile).
