Portimão is preparing to receive two more artistic interventions in urban art, within the scope of the original project “Fresque dos Vizinhos”, an initiative promoted by the Municipality, in partnership with the cultural association LAC – Laboratório de Activities Criativas. The two interventions will take place in strategic locations: the cemetery and the wall next to the Cardosas tunnel, at the entrance to the city, aiming to transform Portimão into an «open-air museum».

The invitation and the ceding of spaces for these interventions was made by the Municipality of Portimão to LAC, but "due to the confinement, the artistic works were delayed" and now "will be part of the 25th of April commemorations", explained Nuno Pereira , responsible for LAC, in an interview with Sul Informação.

This initiative includes, in addition to the wall paintings, a workshop of preparation on the 24th and 25th, under the responsibility of the artist Gonçalo MAR, limited to the participation of 40 people (minimum age 16) and with free registration, followed by the painting of the mural between the 26th and 29th of April.

The proposal for this workshop and the carrying out of artistic-community interventions was presented in 2020 by a group of young people from Portimo, intending to sensitize the community to the requalification of public space, under the Youth Initiative Support Program, but only now will they start the project.

For Gonçalo MAR, who will paint part of the wall of the Cemitério de Portimão, this is a return to the city, after having painted, last year, the mural in Jardim das Águas Vivas, as part of the March 2020 program.

With extensive experience in graffiti, Gonçalo, in the work he is going to draw, will use characteristic elements of the city, to which he will lend his artistic touch. This year, his intervention “will be related to youth and the city”, in an environment strongly inspired by comics and animation.

To our newspaper, Nuno Pereira, responsible for LAC, explained that, «we chose Gonçalo because of its pedagogy and experience of working in the community, especially with young people».

About the "workshop artistic-community, will be open to all young people who want to register and, depending on the result, the artist (Gonçalo MAR) will close the mural, in the following days, with the experiments that the participants did», explained Nuno.

To participate in the workshop, those interested should register with the Sports and Youth Division of the Municipality of Portimão, via e-mail [email protected] or by calling 282470797.

Participants will be organized in small groups, with a maximum of five people simultaneously, distributed in shifts of one and a half hours on each day (10:00-11:30 / 11:30-13:00 / 15:00-16:30 / 16:30-18:30), in order to avoid agglomerates and comply with the safety standards set by the Directorate-General for Health.

On the other hand, the mural by Kruella D'Enfer, a Portuguese illustrator – renowned both nationally and internationally – will consist of “an artistic intervention of great dimensions”, taking advantage of the natural elements that exist in the selected section of the wall: the Cardosas wall , at one of the entrances to Portimão, near the tunnel.

In this intervention, the artist should not escape her style, one can expect “something related to flowers, plants, and other more positive things”.

Kruella's painting will take place between the 22nd and 27th of April, with the mission of «giving more color to this road, which is one of the main entrances to the city of Portimão», explains the responsible for LAC.

As for the next initiatives, LAC is finalizing some partnerships, with the aim of «implementing urban art projects in important areas of Lagos and Portimão, with nationally renowned artists», revealed Nuno Pereira, stressing that «the work of urban art is still a lot to explore» in both Algarve cities.

These works will «dignify and beautify the city, being an open-air museum, where all lovers will be able to enjoy these works of urban art».

The function of urban art is just that: to promote «reflection in a space that belongs to everyone», he concluded.
