Loulé Helipad to be expanded

Estimated investment is 2,6 million euros

The Loulé Heliport will be expanded, with the public tender having already been launched announced this Thursday, April 29, the City Council.

This is "an intervention that aims to increase the capacity to respond to emergency air operations and civil protection in the Algarve region", says the Loulé local authority.

It is an application financed by the cross-border project Interreg/CILIFO (Iberian Center for Research and Fight against Forest Fires), with an estimated investment of 2,6 million euros.

Located at Rua Humberto Pacheco, next to the Municipal Fire Brigade, this is an infrastructure that operates in the areas of rescue and firefighting and its main functions are the reception of private aircraft, medical emergency aircraft and firefighting.

It is here that an INEM (National Institute of Medical Emergency) and another ANEPC (National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority) helicopter, both at the service of the entire region, are permanently located.

The current installation comprises an operation board, support hangar and administrative services building of the Municipal Heliport.

"This project thus encompasses the construction of a new hangar, the expansion and remodeling of support areas to the existing hangar, the construction of a building with support areas for offices, storage rooms, sanitary facilities, changing rooms and technical areas", says the Loulé Chamber.

The apron, fuel tanks and refueling points will also be renovated.

The works are expected to take place within 18 months.

For the municipality, the "intervention to expand the Municipal Heliport of Loulé constitutes an investment of great relevance at regional and national level, as it is a supra-municipal infrastructure to support the activity and emergency, rescue and combating forest fires, with an area of breadth that covers the whole Algarve and adjacent areas».

This is one more piece of equipment that is part of the 'Citadel of Security and Civil Protection' that, for some years now, has been created in the southern area of the city of Loulé.

Thanks to the centrality and proximity to the main communication routes such as the A22, A1 or Aeroporto de Faro, it is here that the Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command of the Algarve was recently installed and where, soon, the new INEM installations in the Algarve will be born.
