BoCA Biennial brings the Faro Gus Van Sant's world premiere

Cultural event will take place in Faro, Lisbon and Almada

The Theater of Figures, in Faro, will be one of the crossing points of the 2021 edition of the BoCA Biennale, a cultural event that will take place between September 3rd and October 17th and which will bring to the Algarve capital, among others, a project by Gus Van Sant.

The world premiere of the play Andy, by this American director, is, moreover, «the first big confirmation» of the 3rd edition of BoCA, whose theme is “Prove you're human”, according to the organizers of the initiative.

«Commissioned and produced by BoCA, this is an Andy Warhol-inspired show that marks the debut of the director of Mala Noche, Elephant or MyOwnPrivate Idaho in stage writing and creation. With a Portuguese artistic team, the cast is composed of teenagers and young people, and the musical direction is the responsibility of Paulo Furtado / TheLegendaryTigerman. The presentations take place at the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II (Lisbon) and at the Teatro das Figuras (Faro)”, reveal.

The presence at the Biennale of Grada Kilomba, of Andreia Santana and of a project that celebrates 100 years of Joseph Beuys is also confirmed.

The complete program of BoCA, which will take place in Lisbon, Almada and Faro, and the opening of ticket offices “will be announced during the month of June”.

According to John Romão, artistic director of the biennial, “this new time is an opportunity for culture and artistic practices to mobilize the deepest sense of collective and to prove their humanity through projects that, at BoCA, rewrite history and its symbols (Grada Kilomba), they revive the belief of joining together and forming a new movement (Gus Van Sant) or imply an interdependence between different beings and forms of life (Andreia Santana)».

Rogério Bacalhau, president of the Chamber of Faro, highlighted that «receiving this important moment of meeting and sharing the arts in Portugal makes us particularly satisfied, because it is also the sign that more and more the South, in general, and Faro, in particular, are producing results in a path of more and better artistic production. BoCA is not “just” a showcase of the best that is done in Portugal in the area of contemporary art. It is a space for thought and reflection that invites an urgent debate on current issues and promotes a much-needed transdisciplinarity, linking cities, artistic territories and audiences. And BoCA's foray into environmental issues is also something that deserves our support and recognition».

Produced in strategic partnership with Lisbon City Council, Almada City Council and the City Council of Faro, the BoCA 2021 biennial program is funded by the Directorate-General for Arts/Ministry of Culture, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Millennium BCP Foundation.
