Vilamoura: Portuguese duo rises to 4th place in the World Sailing Championship

The sailors Diogo and Pedro Costa climbed this Tuesday, March 9th, to the 4th place of the World Championship of the 470 class, which takes place in Vilamoura until next Saturday.

With this classification, the Costa brothers are now the best positioned to occupy the only Olympic place for the Tokyo 2020 Games, which is being discussed by 6 countries.

“Conditions were very good in the first race and we were lucky to get 2nd place. In the second race we didn't find the rhythm. In winter we made a good preparation and here we are doing the best we know how. Let's see what happens,” said Pedro Costa.

In the five races held in this championship so far, the Portuguese sailors have already achieved two second places, revealing some difficulty in the last race of yesterday, 9 March.

On this second day of competitions, the Spanish duo Jordi Xammar and Nicolas Rodriguez, world ranking leaders and current world runners-up, reinforced their leadership by winning another race and revealing that they are closer to the established goal.

“We hope to be world champions. Today we made some mistakes but we still have a lot of championship to go. Let's work», stressed Jordi Xammar.

With wind conditions changing from the first to the second race of the day, the 77-crew fleet had to adapt, but Swedish duo Anton Dahlberg and Fredrik Bergström managed to keep their second place finish yesterday.

The Russian duo Pavel Sozykin and Denis Gribanov overcame the instability of the wind well, with constant changes of direction, managing to win the second race and climb to third place.

In the women's competition, the Spanish Silvia Mas Depares and Patricia Cantero Reina climbed to the first place, changing places with the French Camille Lecointre and Aloise Voltarz, current European champions, now in second.

Israeli duo Noya Bar-Am and Shahar Tibi rose to third place.

On the first day of the RS:X European Championship, Olympic windsurfing sport, the sport's favorites confirmed their level, with Dutchman Kiran Baldos winning and showing that he is willing to revalidate the European champion title and add it to it to that of world champion.

The Polish Piotr Myszka, twice world champion, took second place and the Israeli Yoav Cohen closed the top 3 after the only race of the day.

In the women's competition, the Danish Laerke Buhl-Hansen leads, followed by the Italian Giorgia Speciale and the Polish Zofia Noceti Klepacka.
