Portuguese sailors climb to 2nd place at the Mundial in Vilamoura

The Portuguese sailors Pedro and Diogo Costa climbed today, March 11, to 2nd place in the general table of the World Class 470 Championship taking place in Vilamoura.

The pair won one of the three races of the day and their good performance in the other two allowed them to rise one more place in the classification and increase the distance to their main opponents for the only Olympic spot, still under discussion between seven countries.

“It's a special moment because it was the first time we've won a race in a World Championship. It was a difficult day, the first tack went well, we made a mistake on the 1st buoy but the rest of the race was consistent and went well», stated the Portuguese crew at the end of the day.

With a day marked by good wind conditions for the sport, the Swedes Anton Dahlberg and Fredrik Bergström maintain the leadership of the men's competition with 9 races already completed and the Spanish duo Jordi Xammar and Nicolas Rodriguez, current leaders of the world ranking and vice -world champions returned to the top 3.

In the women's competition, the Spanish Silvia Mas Depares and Patricia Cantero Reina maintain the lead for the third consecutive day, followed by the Dutch Aphrodite Zegers and Lobke Berkhout, who rose one more place.

The 3rd place is now occupied by the Italians Elena Berta and Bianca Caruso after a good performance today, winning one of the 3 regattas.

In this class, on the fourth day of competition, Turkey is best placed to fill the only Olympic place in the women's fleet still available, followed by Russia and Ukraine.

In the mixed competition, the Israelis Gil Cohen and Noam Homri dethroned the English duo Amy Seabright and James Taylor from the leadership, now relegated to 2nd place. Italians Maria Vittoria Marchesini and Bruno Festo close the podium.

Mixed crews will be the exclusive format to be adopted after the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, this being the last world championship with separate competitions between the two genders.

On the third day of the European Championship RS:X class, Olympic windsurfing sport, the Dutchman Kiran Badloe, current European and world champion, returned to the lead after winning all 3 races of the day.

Italian Mattia Camboni maintains 2nd place in the table and Israeli Ofek Elimelech returned to the podium now occupying 3rd place.

In the women's competition, the Polish Zofia Noceti Klepacka rose from the 3rd to the leadership, sending the French Charline Picon, current European champion, to the 2nd place. Italian Giorgia Speciale closes the top 3.
