Three women command Navy ships on mission in the South

Today there are 881 women in the Navy, representing 11% of the universe

The three ships that the Navy has a mission in the Southern Maritime Zone are all commanded by women. NRP Escorpião, NRP Pégaso and NRP Sagittarius are respectively in charge of Lieutenants Joana Canas Costa, Raquel Monteiro Pinto and Catarina Matos Aresta.

Second Lieutenant Raquel Monteiro Pinto, in the Portuguese Navy since 2012, has been the commander of the NRP Pégaso since 8 September last year.

Second Lieutenant Catarina Matos Aresta also joined the Navy in 2012 and has been in charge of the NRP Sagittarius since February 11 this year.

The three ships are currently on mission in the Southern Maritime Zone.

According to a statement from the Navy, "the command of warships by female naval officers took place for the first time in 2006." Since then, "20 women have been in command on board".

It was in 1992 that the first military women entered the Navy. “For 29 years, integration has been done naturally in the most varied areas, with a special focus on the operational area”, stresses the Navy. Today there are 881 military personnel and represent 11% of the Navy universe.​
