PSD: Absence of public in Formula 1 and MotoGP gives the image of «a reclusive Algarve»

Algarve deputies of the PSD want the government to review decision

The PSD deputies elected by the circle of Faro consider that the absence of public at the Portuguese Formula 1 Grand Prix and Moto GP will «project the image of a reclusive Algarve, closed by the virus» and ask the Government to review a decision that could «cause clear damages for the Algarve and For the country".

For Cristóvão Norte, Rui Cristina and Ofélia Ramos, these events, «with completely deserted stands, before the summer, is the image that the Algarve and the country cannot project».

Social Democrat deputies consider that the absence of public “is inconsistent with the fact that, for months, the company responsible for the initiative, Parkalgar, and the General Directorate of Health, have built, in total harmony, a demanding safety protocol and safeguarding public health, which, among others, made entry permission subject to a negative Covid-19 test, a reduced capacity and rules of social distancing».

The parliamentarians say that, "if these races were publicly available – always in a much lower number than the racecourse holds – these initiatives would be the ones that would ensure greater rigor and health demand in any sphere of social life."

Without a public, "unlike the other big prizes to be disputed in this period, and in front of a television audience that exceeds 100 million people", consider the deputies, "the image of a reclusive Algarve, closed by the virus, a country will be projected which is not yet in recovery, nor ready to receive visitors. This is very harmful».

For Cristóvão Norte, Rui Cristina and Ofélia Ramos, “in April and May, at a time when summer is being prepared, when potential visitors are making reservations and making their decisions regarding the summer season, this is the image that the Algarve and Portugal cannot project».

Bearing in mind that the Algarve «has managed to keep the pandemic under control, with a small number of cases, without excessive pressure on the health services» and that «health measures are in place», the deputies elected by the Algarve «request that the Government review the decision, under penalty of causing clear damages for the Algarve and for the country, which can be avoided without jeopardizing public health».
