Atlético building almost ready to be the new headquarters of the Casa da Cultura de Loulé

This is a landmark building in the city's memory

The rehabilitation works of the Atlético Sporting Clube building, in Rua das Lojas, are almost completed. The building will house the new headquarters of the Casa da Cultura de Loulé.

According to the municipality, this association “has been waiting for years for a central space, with the right conditions to carry out its work and now sees that project implemented”.

"The work carried out on site focused on adapting the second floor of the building to a multipurpose space for cultural activities, maintaining the characteristics and maximum use of existing elements, providing it with good conditions of use at a structural level, health and comfort,” he adds.

Moreover, «a contemporary approach was taken, reconciling heritage and symbolic values, in response to the new functional requirements of a space linked to culture».

The work involved a municipal investment of around 360 thousand euros.

For Vítor Aleixo, Mayor of Loulé, «this project is the realization of yet another important work of rehabilitation of the architectural heritage of the city of Loulé and the 'revival' of elements that are part of the memory of the local community».

«After the interventions in the Solar da Música Nova, now transformed into the Conservatório de Música de Loulé, or the emblematic work of the Palácio Gama Lobo, which is now the central nucleus of the Loulé Criativo project, here we take another step towards giving back to the population a building that is part of the city's history. And we do so with our eyes set on our cultural dynamics, not only in programmatic terms, but also in supporting the associative movement, in this case in particular the Casa da Cultura de Loulé», he adds.

A remarkable space in the city's memory, as a recreational, cultural and debate hub, this building was thought to have been created in the 1942th century and it was there that it served as the headquarters of Atlético Sporting Clube, from XNUMX until the association's extinction. Dances, conferences, floral games and film sessions were some of the activities that marked this place.

There was also a library there with censored books, which clearly shows the important role it played during the final period of the Estado Novo.
