The public tender for the construction of the new Monchique Air Resources Center should be launched "by the end of this month", said Rui André, Mayor, to the Sul Informação.

At the Chamber meeting this Tuesday, March 9th, “an element that we needed to move forward with the process was approved, which was the appointment of the jury for the project's competition,” explained the mayor.

Before the competition is launched, the approval of the Municipal Assembly is still lacking, as this «is a multi-annual project», adds the mayor.

This is a work that has been talked about for a long time, but it was delayed, as Rui André explained to our newspaper, in August, due to «a long process for the acquisition of the land» and also due to the elaboration of the project.

The new Air Resources Centre, which will be built on the Semedeiro site, will cost around 1,5 million euros and is part of an INTERREG application – Iberian Center for Research and Fight Against Forest Fires – Portugal/Spain.

The Air Resources and Civil Protection Center will also be complemented with a Training Unit of the Fire Brigade School, something that has been registered since 2013, and will have the capacity for accommodation and overnight stays for military personnel and others, as well as being used to accommodate people and goods in situations of disaster or fire.
