Online shopping rises 46% in second general confinement

E-commerce currently represents 18% of total electronic purchases

Online purchases increased 46% in Portugal between January 15 and February 28, compared to the same period last year, with e-commerce boosting consumption during this second general confinement, according to data released today by SIBS.

According to SIBS Analytics, which aggregates consumption indicators, e-commerce currently represents 18% of total electronic purchases, a figure that practically doubled compared to the pre-pandemic period.

The MB Way, according to data, has been one of the most used payment methods, having its use almost quadrupled (3,8 times) compared to the same period in 2020.

“It should be noted that this growth has been continuous, proving that MB WAY is the mobile payments service preferred by more and more Portuguese, consumers and companies”, he says.

With regard to in-store consumption, he adds, "there was a 31% drop in purchases on the ATM network in this second confinement compared to the same period in 2020, values ​​still far from those verified from March to May of last year, in which physical purchases fell by 47%”.

In line with the first confinement is consumption in the sectors of super and hypermarkets, small food distribution, pharmacies and parapharmacies, which once again gain a notable weight in the total purchases made by the Portuguese in stores, now representing 61% of transactions, a record very close to 67% last year and a growth of 14 percentage points compared to the months of November, December 2020 and the first half of January 2021.

The same is true for online shopping, with the sectors of entertainment, culture and subscriptions, food and retail, catering, 'food delivery' and 'takeaways' to represent a large share of transactions in this channel, currently corresponding to 46% of total purchases, close to 52% of the first confinement.

Also in store purchases, the increase in the use of MB WAY has been very significant, with transactions through this service growing 2,9 times in the last month and a half, compared to the same period in 2020.

The average value of purchases recorded since mid-January is 37,2 euros in store and 37,6 euros online, with a variation of -4% and -3%, respectively, compared to the period prior to the second confinement, signals .
