Albufeira students, Faro and Olhão represent the Algarve in the Youth Parliament

District Session was held on Tuesday, the 9th

Ana Taís Silva and Bárbara Fernandes, from Escola Secundária João de Deus, in Faro, Francisco Fernandes Marreiros (Door – Voice of the District of Faro) and Diogo Miguel Ventura Simão, from Dr. Francisco Fernandes Lopes Secondary School, from Olhão and Bruno Barreto, and Catarina Silva, from Albufeira Secondary School, will be the Algarve representatives at the National Session of the “Youth Parliament 2019/2021” program of the Secondary education, which will take place on the 14th and 15th of June at the Assembly of the Republic, in Lisbon.

These young people were chosen at the District Session of this initiative, which took place on March 9th, by videoconference and where the topic “Domestic Violence and Dating: How to guarantee respect and equality” was discussed.

This meeting was attended by 30 students who had been previously elected to compete in the regional phase of this initiative of the Assembly of the Republic, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth (IPDJ), which aims to «encourage the interest of young people for civic and political participation».

 

 

The young people who attended the session represented nine schools in the Algarve, namely the Vocational Cândido Guerreiro – CIPRL (Alte – Loulé), Secondary João de Deus schools (Faro), Secondary Manuel Teixeira Gomes (Portimão), Secondary Drª Laura Ayres (Quarteira – Loulé), Secondary School Júlio Dantas (Lagos), Secondary School Dr. Francisco Fernandes Lopes (Olhão), Secondary School of Albufeira, Secondary School Tomás Cabreira (Faro) and Loulé Secondary School.

In the end, “measures that the young people of the Algarve propose to be taken into consideration by the Assembly of the Republic” were approved.

«Once again, young people from the Algarve have shown a great capacity for intervention, reflection and a critical spirit in defending their ideas, already denoting a very appreciable maturity», highlighted the IPDJ.

In addition to the 30 students, the District Session was attended by Custódio Moreno regional director of the IPDJ Algarve, by Rogério Bacalhau, president of the Chamber of Faro, and Cristóvão Norte, deputy to the Assembly of the Republic elected by the Algarve, "who at the beginning of the session answered questions posed by the young deputies about the powers and functioning of the Parliament".
