Ponte do Guadiana was the crossing point with the most people prevented from entering Portugal

According to data from the Ministry of Internal Administration, a total of 4020 people and 2.841 vehicles were controlled at the eight authorized crossing points

33 people were prevented from entering Portugal by the Guadiana International Bridge (Castro Marim) this Sunday, 31 January, the first day that the reinstatement of border control with Spain came into force. This was even the Authorized Crossing Post (PPA) where most people were prevented from crossing the border.

According to data from the Ministry of Internal Administration, a total of 4020 people and 2.841 vehicles were controlled at the eight authorized crossing points.

The Vilar Formoso PPA was the busiest in the first 24 hours, with 1.142 people controlled and 23 prevented from continuing their journey, followed by Valença, Viana do Castelo (744), Vila Verde da Raia, Chaves (687), Caia, Elvas ( 643), Quintanilha, Bragança (333), Castro Marim (312), Vila Verde de Ficalho, Beja (103) and Marvão, Portalegre (56).

Castro Marim was the PPA where more people were prevented from going to their destination (33), 10 more than in Vilar Formoso and Vila Verde da Raia (23), followed by Valença and Caia (6), Marvão (4), Quintanilha (3) and Vila Verde de Ficalho (1).

At unauthorized crossing points, 34 vehicles were forwarded to the PPAs, according to a statement from the Ministry.

In addition to the eight permanent PPAs, there are five other points that operate only on weekdays between 7:00 am and 9:00 am and between 18:00 pm and 20:00 pm, namely in Monção, Miranda do Douro, Termas de Monfortinho, Mourão and Barrancos.

In Rio de Onor it is possible to cross the border between Portugal and Spain on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 10:00 and 12:00.

The temporary reinstatement of control of people at the borders with Spain is part of the measures to contain the covid-19 pandemic that came into force at 00:00 on Sunday.
