Work has already begun on the Igreja Matriz in Loulé

«This is a work of great importance for Loulé», says the City Council

The rehabilitation works of the Igreja Matriz de Loulé, classified as a National Monument, are already underway.

«At a time when the works relating to the restoration of the portico are already completed, the architectural conservation works are now starting, with a total value of more than 890 thousand euros, aimed at the recovery and improvement of the building, solving the constructive, functional and hygienic anomalies and security accumulated over the years», says the City Council of Loulé.

These works focus on the facades, roofs, infrastructure and bell tower.

Over the last few years, the altarpieces and altars of this Church have also been restored.

According to the City Council of Loulé, “this is a work of great importance for Loulé not only from the heritage point of view, but because this Church is the main place of worship for the city's Catholic community, whether in terms of weddings, funerals or communions'.

Located in the Largo do Batalhão dos Sapadores dos Caminhos de Ferro in the southernmost part of the historic town of Loulé, next to the port of Faro from the medieval wall, the Igreja Matriz de Loulé or the Igreja de S. Clemente was possibly built on the site occupied by the mosque of Al'-Ulyà, in the second half of the XNUMXth century.

In a southern Gothic style, the church maintains its original design, with Manueline-style side chapels having been added in the XNUMXth century.

In recent years, this church has been the stage for concerts related to classical music, namely during the MED Festival or at the Encontros de Música Antiga.
