Continente will acquire, this year, 14,5 thousand tonnes of oranges from the Algarve, 5% more than in the past, announced this large-scale brand.

According to Continente, this is a way of strengthening "the focus on national production" and helping "the development of the regional economy so affected in the last year due to the pandemic".

In 2020, the brand sold 13,8 thousand tons of Algarve oranges.

All oranges available in Continente stores are from the Algarve, including oranges available in juice machines in stores, as well as natural orange juice on sale in BAGGA cafeterias and in their home deliveries through BAGGA Delivery, which is squeezed at the hour.

The Continente Producers Club (CPC), in partnership with its producers, guarantees that the best agricultural practices are used in the Algarve's orchards, resulting in excellent fruit. The orange from the Algarve Continente is hand-picked and at the optimum flavor point.

The two thousand hectares of orchards are distributed between Tavira and Silves and belong to around 100 producers that make up the four Producer Organizations that are members of the Continente Producers Club.

Algarve oranges are certified by IGP – Protected Geographical Indication – which certifies that the product has a certain quality, reputation or other characteristics that can essentially be attributed to its geographical origin.

Ondina Afonso, president of the CPC, says that “the security we feel in relation to the quality of the Algarve oranges produced by our producers has allowed us to diversify the offer by making Algarve orange juice available in our stores, precisely at a time when the our customers are looking for foods that can boost their immunity.”

Sales of Portuguese products in Continente stores have progressively increased, and in the last year, more than 160 tonnes of agri-food goods were purchased, including exclusive products of certified origin, such as oranges from the Algarve, apples from Alcobaça and apples. Beira Alta or the Rocha do Oeste pear.
