Alentejo, with 71,2%, and Algarve, with 71,6%, are the two regions in the country with the lowest rate of fixed high-speed internet coverage, according to data released by ANACOM, for the 3rd quarter of 2020. According to this data, Alentejo and Algarve are well below the national average, which stands at 87%.

If we talk only about fiber optic coverage, coverage in the Algarve and Alentejo is also well below the average for the rest of the country. In the Algarve, only 62,1% of households can install services supported by this technology, while in Alentejo the percentage is 69,7%.

The national average is 83% coverage.

With regard to the other technology that allows high-speed internet, with coaxial cable, coverage in the 3rd quarter of 2020 was, in Alentejo, 31,4%, and in Algarve, 53,7%. The national average stands at 59,4%.

Despite these figures, ANACOM emphasizes that the situation has improved significantly compared to the previous year, as there was a «growth in the number of cabled households» which was 8,1% in the Algarve and 7,4% in Alentejo, «regions where the coverage of high-speed networks approached the national average, thus strengthening territorial cohesion».

At national level, ANACOM estimates that, in the third quarter of 2020, «at least around 5,5 million households were cabled with
a high-speed network, 4,2% more than in the same quarter of the previous year».

The growth verified, «although significant, is lower than that registered a year ago (5,4%). The coverage of high-speed networks was 87%, 3,3 percentage points (pp) more than at the end of 3Q2019», concludes ANACOM.
