Presidential: Nearly 197 voters have already asked to vote on Sunday

Registration deadline for early voting ends today

Nearly 197 people asked for the early vote on mobility for the 24 January presidential elections in three days, a source from the Ministry of Internal Affairs told Lusa today.

In times of the Covid-19 pandemic and at a time when new general confinement is expected, records are set daily in registration for early voting. In the last legislative, in 2019, 50.638 voters voted in advance, having registered 56.287.

In the first 24 hours of the registration period on Sunday, registration to vote a week before the election reached 52.994, a number that almost multiplied by four by 23:59 pm on Wednesday, 196.786.

The Portuguese who are unable to vote in the presidential elections on January 24th may request, until midnight today, to exercise their right to vote a week earlier, at a polling station of their choice.

Early voting on mobility was extended by law passed in parliament and can be done at the headquarters of each of the country's 308 counties, instead of the district seat, as happened in the 2019 European and legislative elections.

Thus, anyone who wants to bring their vote forward to January 17, in any town hall, instead of the 24th at the polling station where they are registered, must request it by the end of today.

The request can be made electronically with the Ministry of Internal Administration on the website www.votoanticipado.mai.gov.pt or through regular mail.

The voter must mention the full name, date of birth, civil identification number, address, mobile polling station where he / she intends to exercise the right to vote, email address and / or telephone contact, with a draft on the website Ministry of Internal Affairs.

On January 17, voters vote at the table in the chosen location, in accordance with the amendment to the law, approved in October by the Assembly of the Republic.

The presidential elections, which are taking place in the midst of the Covid-19 epidemic in Portugal, are scheduled for January 24th and this is the 10th time that the Portuguese are called to choose the President of the Republic in democracy, since 1976.

The electoral campaign started on the 10th and ends on the 22nd of January. Seven candidates are running for the elections, Marisa Matias (supported by the Left Bloc), Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa (PSD and CDS/PP) Tiago Mayan Gonçalves (Liberal Initiative), André Ventura (Enough), Vitorino Silva, better known as Tino de Rans , João Ferreira (PCP and PEV) and PS activist Ana Gomes (PAN and Livre).
