Covid-19: More than 3.000 people signed petition calling for open study rooms

Decree allows the schools to remain in operation, but forces the closing of ATL, language schools, driving schools and tutoring centers

More than 3.000 people have signed so far this morning a petition advocating that study rooms remain open during the confinement decreed by the Government and which began today.

The promoters of the petition, which until 10:15 am had been signed by 3.069 people, recall that the Government decided to keep the schools open, but chose to close the study rooms, which “provide educational support to students, helping to promote school success ” and that the promoters consider “a fundamental support”.

"In addition to this important pillar for children and young people, it is important to highlight and understand that the study rooms are a fundamental support for guardians who do not have family support, and now they do not know to whom they will entrust the monitoring of their children during the period in which these are not at the school (which works by hourly blocks)”, they explain.

The petition's promoters also question the Government about why schools can remain open and study rooms, “attended by a few dozen students” cannot and what is the difference in the risk of contagion in the current epidemiological context because of covid -19.

They also ask who will help students to clarify doubts “that cannot be clarified individually in classes composed of 30 students” and also want to know what the option is for parents whose children only attend classes in the morning or in the afternoon.

“They will be discharged so that they can accompany their children because they have nowhere and with whom to stay”, they ask.

They also question the logic “of keeping services with less importance for the future of the country open” and argue that withdrawing from students the possibility of individualized monitoring, practiced in study rooms, is “removing the rug from under their feet”.

“Children and young people do not go to study rooms to socialize. They frequent these spaces because they need extra support, tools to help them overcome difficulties, professionals who motivate and guide them”, they stress.

In the text of the petition, the signatories stress that the study rooms "are a very important support for schools that want motivated and successful students in school" and ask that the law "allow all those who will guarantee a solid future in all aspects to continue to be supported”.

The decree that regulates the new state of emergency allows the schools to remain in operation, but obliges them to close leisure activities (ATL), language schools, driving schools and tutoring centers.
