camera of Faro donated 25 hospital beds to the Algarve University Hospital Center

The University Hospital Center of the Algarve (CHUA) gained another 25 Covid and non-Covid inpatient beds, with the help of the Chamber of Faro.

The administration of the Algarve hospitals made a request to the Regional Command for Civil Protection and the Faro local authority "in conjunction with the direction of the Emergency Service, promptly provided the delivery of 25 beds and mattresses in hospital fabric," according to the Chamber.

Contacted by Sul Informação, Ana Castro, the president of the Board of Directors of CHUA, explained that the beds “will serve to expand our wards into new spaces, in order to accommodate Covid and non-Covid patients”.

“That way we can open areas that were not inpatient areas as areas destined to hospitalize patients. These are spaces that are normally used for consultations and that did not have beds», he revealed.

The Chamber of Faro, who “had already collaborated with CHUA in the preparation of the Sporting Clube Farense pavilion to, if necessary, constitute a support area for the hospital in Faro» he said he also has «75 beds available for the possible need to install field hospitals, namely the one planned for the Penha Municipal Sports Pavilion».

The one hundred hospital beds were acquired by the Chamber of Faro in April, “for back-up support to communities and support from health facilities”.

These additional beds should not be necessary, bearing in mind that it has been open since Sunday. the CHUA COVID Field Hospital, in Portimão Arena.

The activation of this structure, with a capacity to hospitalize 100 people with Covid-19, was carried out within the scope of Phase 4, the highest response to the disease foreseen in the contingency plan of the Algarve hospital center.

On the day this response was put into effect, Ana Castro revealed that she hoped it would be enough to meet, not only the needs of the Algarve, but also to provide support to other regions of the country.

Adding the Covid-19 inpatient capacity existing in hospitals in Faro and Portimão and those that at CHUA Arena, as the field hospital is called, have 220 beds to accommodate Covid-19 patients in the Algarve.
