Portuguese are going to eat between four and five thousand tons of cod in the consoada

Pandemic will not affect cod consumption

The Portuguese will eat between four and five thousand tons of cod in this consoada, around 30% of the total consumption, a number that should not be impacted by the pandemic, the Norwegian Council for Sea Products told Lusa.

"The consumption of cod in Norway during the Christmas season represents about 30% of the annual total, and it is estimated that on Christmas Eve, between four and five thousand tons of cod are consumed in Portugal", pointed out, in response to Lusa, the director for Portugal from the Norwegian Sea Products Council (NSC), Johnny Thomassen.

In terms of origin, 70% of all cod consumed in Portugal comes from Norway.

As Johnny Thomassen has stated, these numbers are unlikely to be impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

In total, Portugal is responsible for 20% of the consumption of cod in the world, positioning itself as the market that most prefers this fish.

This year, competition between large supermarkets led to a drop in the prices of this fish compared to the previous year, similarly to what happened in Norway, but domestic consumption is expected to remain unchanged or rise.

“Frozen soaked cod represents 20% of the market and salted dry cod the remaining 80%. The deep-frozen soaked cod market grew by around 8% between September 2019 and September 2020, while the salted dry cod remained relatively stable, with a slight decrease of 1%”, said the NSC.
