Portimão has already started installing nest boxes to be local housing for birds

12 out of 30 boxes have already been installed

Portimão installed yesterday 12 of the 30 nest boxes that will be placed in various locations in the municipality, under the “Local Housing for Birds” project, one of the winning proposals of the Participatory Budget Portugal 2018, presented by the Algarve association Vita Nativa.

The project, which is being implemented by the Algarve association in partnership with the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF), aims to "provide new places for nesting birds in an urban context".

'The nest boxes, of different sizes, target titmice, hoopoe and medium-sized birds of prey, such as the kestrel, barn owl and owl, and they are planned to be installed in two phases. During at least two nesting seasons, these artificial nests will be monitored, either in terms of possible occupants, or in the respective cleaning and maintenance», according to the City Council of Portimão.

For now, 12 nest boxes have been installed in the vicinity of public spaces and facilities, such as the Portimão Arena, the Quinta Pedagógica, the Municipal Nursery and the Jardim das Águas Livres.

«Portimonense Sporting Clube and the Portimão Hotel and Tourism School joined the initiative, having also installed nest boxes, respectively, in the Municipal Stadium of Portimão and in the garden of the educational establishment. In this first phase, a nest-box was also installed at the Bemposta Basic and Secondary School», added the municipality.

In January, the remaining nest boxes will be installed in other public gardens in Portimão, in kindergartens and in public schools in the municipality.

«This project aims to fix more birds in urban areas, encourage direct contact between citizens and the species involved, highlight the role played by birds in combating various biological pests, such as the pine processionary, rodents and large insects, at the same time sensitizing local agents, namely the hotel industry, associated services and the school community, to the importance of urban biodiversity», concluded the Municipality of Portimão.
