The book “Platibandas”, in which this “remarkable reference of the buildings of the Algarve” is immortalized in images taken by photographer Filipe da Palma, will be launched on Friday, 3 September.

The work is illustrated with more than 160 photographs by the Algarve's Filipe da Palma, author of «a significant and original photographic survey, which became the basis of an important study for the region's identity and for lovers of the Algarve's heritage», according to the Argumentum publisher.

This reflection is explained in the texts of Miguel Reimão Costa, José Eduardo Horta Correia, Alexandre Tojal and Pedro Prista that appear in the book. The preface is by Guilherme d'Oliveira Martins.

As the book's publisher points out, the platbands, an architectural element present in many typical houses in the Algarve, «are an element of great heritage value, with a notable importance in the image of urban agglomerations and rural nuclei.

Although they are more common in Sotavento, they can be seen in buildings scattered throughout the region.

«The platbands are a very spatial expression of the affirmation of the regional constructive culture, both in popular and erudite architecture. They are also a testament to the taste of creating forms and the expertise of building of the Algarve people», added Argumentum.

The book can be purchased for 35 euros from Thursday, through the publisher's website.
