João Pires, civil construction businessman, former mayor of Faro and who remained in the history of Sporting Clube Farense, as the president who led the club, for the first time, to the 1st division.

The illustrious Farense died this Monday, aged 95, over which he left marks in the most diverse sectors of society, from the business area to culture – he was himself an amateur artist.

In addition to having founded and named a well-known civil construction company in Faro, João Pires was currently the number 1 member of Farense, the club of which he was president in 1970, the year in which the Lions of Faro rose for the first time to the top echelon of Portuguese football.

He was also vice president of the Chamber of Faro.

His professional and civic activity was distinguished both locally and nationally.

In 2010, he received the commendation of the Class of Industrial Merit, from the then President of the Republic Cavaco Silva, in the commemorations of June 10, which took place in Faro.

Before, in 1992, he had already received the city's Gold Medal from the City Council. Faro.
