João Guerreiro takes over as the new president of A3ES

João Guerreiro, full professor and former rector of the University of the Algarve (UAlg), takes office this Friday, December 18, as president of the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education, A3ES.

The inauguration ceremony of the new A3ES Board of Directors precedes the conference “Reflecting on the past and the future of the assessment and accreditation of higher education in Portugal”, which will take place at Teatro Thalia, in Lisbon, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm.

In this conference, which begins with an introduction by Manuel Sobrinho Simões, president of the Board of Trustees of A3ES, the outgoing president Alberto Amaral will speak, followed by João Guerreiro, who will make his first speech as president of A3ES.

Until then, the former dean of UAlg performed the functions of president of the National Commission for Access to Higher Education (CNAES).

The conference program also includes a debate with brief speeches by the presidents of academic federations and the presidents of the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities (CRUP), Coordinating Council of Polytechnic Institutes (CCISP) and the Portuguese Association of Private Higher Education (APESP) .

The closing session will be chaired by Manuel Heitor, Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education.

João Pinto Guerreiro has a degree in Geography from the University of Lisbon, master of science in Rural Planning and Environment, PhD in Economic Sciences and aggregate in Regional Economics from the University of Algarve.

In addition to being dean of UAlg (2006-2013), he held several functions within the scope of university management, including those of dean for the transfer of technology and innovation and coordinator of the Regional Center for Innovation in the Algarve. He was also chairman of the Algarve Region Coordination Committee (1996-2003) and of the Algarve Operational Program – PROA.

In 2017, he chaired the Independent Technical Commission on fires, appointed by the Assembly of the Republic.

Since 2013 he has held the functions of chairman of the National Commission for Access to Higher Education (CNAES).
