Two works from the Novo Banco collection are already part of the Olhão Museum

The works given away, two oil paintings on canvas, are entitled “Hibernia. Entry into the Tagus" and "Sailboat in the Tagus"

Two works by the English painter Thomas Buttersworth, belonging to the Novo Banco collection, will be part of the permanent exhibition of the Municipal Museum of Olhão. The welcome ceremony for the oil paintings on canvas took place this Thursday, December 10th.

The transfer of these works to the Museum of Olhão follows a protocol signed today between the Municipality of Olhão and Novo Banco, within the scope of the Novo Banco Cultura project.

The works given away, two oil paintings on canvas, are entitled “Hibernia. Entry into the Tagus” and “Sailboat on the Tagus”.

As the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve explains, «Thomas Buttersworth was a self-taught painter and sailor who lived in the troubled period of the Napoleonic wars. Many of the paintings he made refer to events he witnessed on the Atlantic coast or battles in which he participated, constituting an important iconographic legacy».

The ceremony was attended by António Ramalho, CEO of Novo Banco, Adriana Nogueira, regional director of Culture of the Algarve, and António Pina, mayor of Olhão.
