Alcoutim will have nest boxes that will serve as “Local accommodation for birds”, under a collaboration between the Municipality of Alcoutim and the Native Vita association.
On Wednesday, the 9th, the Alcoutim City Council approved the signing of a protocol by this Algarve nature conservation association for the installation and maintenance of nest boxes.
This action is part of the project "Local accommodation for birds", one of the winners of the Participatory Budget Portugal 2018, which was proposed and is being developed on the ground by Vita Nativa, whose objective is to promote bird diversity throughout the region of Algarve.
Also a partner in the project is the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF), represented by the Regional Directorate for Nature Conservation and Forests of the Algarve.
«The main action of the project involves the provision and installation, free of charge, of nest boxes (about 25 in the municipality of Alcoutim) for small species of birds, such as titmice, and for medium-sized birds of prey, such as the Common kestrel, the Barn Owl and the Galician Owl», according to the Municipality of Alcoutim.
"With this, it intends to stimulate the fixation of more birds in urban areas and, in this way, stimulate interest and provide a more direct contact between society in relation to birds, as well as promoting and highlighting the important role of birds in the control of biological pests" , added the municipality.
The project aims to involve society in general, «but above all the various local and regional agents that manage the Algarve's territory, including municipalities, ICNF and also private entities linked to the sectors of hospitality, agriculture and forestry'.
«As environmental awareness is another objective of the project, activities will be developed with school communities, the Ciência Viva Centers and other organizations in the region linked to education», concluded the Chamber of Alcoutim.
