First “Local Housing for Birds” will be inaugurated in Olhão

Project “Local Accommodation for Birds” was one of the winners of the Participatory Budget Portugal

The first will be inaugurated in Olhão, on the 26th, at 15:30 pm, and is intended for hoopoes or black starlings. But a further 1999 nest-boxes will soon be installed in the Algarve, also thinking of species such as owl owls, barren owls and kestrels, within the scope of the “Local Accommodation for Birds” project, one of the winners of the Participatory Budget Portugal.

This initiative by young algarvian association Vita Nativa  and ICNF – Regional Directorate for Nature Conservation and Forests of the Algarve will see its first physical structure inaugurated during a symbolic ceremony scheduled for the headquarters of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, at Quinta de Marim, in Olhão.

The idea is "to signal the beginning of the installation of the 2000 nest boxes planned for the entire Algarve region", according to Vita Nativa.

This ceremony takes place “after two months of preparation, which included meetings, field visits and the definition of nest box models and their construction”.

«For this moment, we have chosen to install a nest box for hoopoes or black starlings, species that are very familiar to the citizens and easily seen in the gardens of the Algarve's cities and towns», according to the Algarve's nature conservation association.

In addition to this nest-box model, five more were created, each thinking “on the specifics of the target species”, also taking into account “the place/habitat to be installed”.

One of the objectives of this project “is to provide nesting sites for various cave species that live in urban and peri-urban contexts”.

At issue are “from small species of passerines, such as titmice, hoopoes and starlings, to small and medium-sized birds of prey, such as owls, barren owls and kestrels”.

Another objective is “to use these birds as flag species for the natural control of pest species”.

Even because, defends Vita Nativa, the question that arises is why we don't let nature work by itself.

"We know that it will be impossible to eradicate the use of pesticides, but we are certain that it will be possible to move towards reducing the amount used and, in this way, make ecosystems healthier and more sustainable", they believe.

Finally, with the “Local Accommodation for Birds”, it is intended to generate “more sensitivity and interest towards birds” of people living in large urban centers.

“We will strive to ensure that during the project and, more importantly, after it is finished, citizens and entities have an enormous desire to monitor the nest boxes. And that they wait anxiously for next spring to see if the couple returns to occupy the nest box and to reproduce successfully», concludes Vita Nativa.
