It is not "a lie nor a hoax". The Southern Zone Teachers Union (SPZS) says there are 235 teachers missing in the Algarve and Alentejo, data that "are quite worrying".

In a statement sent to the Sul Informação, the SPZS explains that it made “a questionnaire with the groups of schools in Alentejo and Algarve, about the missing timetables, noting that there are 41 teachers missing in the district of Portalegre, 27 in the district of Évora, 48 in the district of Beja and 119 in the district of Faro».

Although the Union has not yet received a response from all groups of schools, these data are already "quite worrying, since, five weeks after the beginning of the school year, there is a need for at least 235 teachers in the SPZS union area" .

According to the SPZS, this lack of teachers "crosses all education cycles", despite being "much more relevant in the 3rd and secondary cycles".

“In the 1st cycle there are 28 teachers missing, including the English subject, in the 2nd cycle there is a shortage of 37 teachers, with the subjects of Portuguese, English, Musical Education and Moral and Catholic Religious Education being the most relevant. In the 3rd and secondary cycles there is a need for 169 teachers, mainly in the subjects of Portuguese, English, Spanish, History, Geography, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, Informatics and Visual Arts».

The lack of Special Education teachers “is also notorious, revealing that there are many students with special educational needs who are not receiving the proper support”, denounces the Union.

Analyzing these data, the SPZS concludes that "most of the hours are temporary and/or incomplete, many of them due to sick leave by older teachers, which makes them more difficult to occupy".

“Teachers avoid traveling too far from their home to work just a few hours or in many cases just a month, receiving, in most cases, a salary equivalent to the minimum wage or even less”, he adds.

«The lack of teachers is not a lie, nor a hoax, as the Ministry of Education tries to deceive the Portuguese. It is a serious problem that the country has been going through for many years», he regrets.

Finally, the SPZS – as well as FENPROF – argue that “the lack of teachers can be addressed, among others, through the reinforcement of teachers in the staff of schools / school clusters; eliminating the abuse of the use of fixed-term contracts; strengthening the national nature of competitions and professional graduation as a criterion for ranking candidates; reduction of the geographical area of the QZP and access to all vacancies open to competition by all candidates in competitions'.
