Boas, python and tarantula seized from a 16 year old girl in Albufeira

Animals are protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)

Two pythons, a python and a tarantula, all of internationally protected species, were seized from a 16-year-old boy who was illegally keeping them in captivity at his home in Albufeira.

The operation that resulted in this seizure originated «in the capture of a boa constrictor “Boa Arco-iris”, found in the street of a house in Albufeira, on the 15th of October».

An investigation by the GNR's Environmental Protection Nucleus (NPA) in Albufeira identified the owner of the animal, who kept two more “Boa Arco-iris” boa constrictors at home (epicrates cenchria), a Piton Ball (Python regius) and a Nicaraguan curly tarantula (Tliltocatl Albopilosus).

The four animals were seized, as they are internationally protected specimens, under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), in Albufeira. The four were “delivered to an amusement park in Quarteira”.

The GNR military prepared two notices of infraction, due to lack of CITES Certificate, Registration of Detention of Dangerous Specimens and Breeder Registration.

The action was supported by the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF), the CITES Authority in Portugal.
