Portuguese people today save three times less than in the 70s and 80s

The Portuguese currently save three times less than they did 30 or 40 years ago, with household savings, as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), being half that registered in Germany, France or Sweden. But private consumption has never been so high.

Released on the occasion of World Savings Day, which marks this Saturday, statistics from Pordata – the database of the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation – show that, in 2019 (provisional data), savings accounted for 7% of disposable income. individuals (families and non-profit institutions serving families) in Portugal. This percentage is slightly above the 6,8% in 2018, but is far below the 19,3% recorded in 1989 and the 22,3% in 1979.
