Portimão recalls contesting the Estado Novo on the day Teixeira Gomes returned

As part of the celebrations for the 160th anniversary of the birth of Manuel Teixeira Gomes

Recalling «one of the main events to contest the Estado Novo» that took place in Portimão is the objective of the meeting “O Regresso de Teixeira Gomes”, which will take place on Sunday, October 18, at 17:00, at Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes.

This conversation focuses on events that date back to October 18, 1950, due to the transfer of the mortal remains of the writer and statesman, from Algeria to the Portimão cemetery.

“The ceremony gave rise to an opposition demonstration that unleashed arbitrary persecutions and arrests, in charge of the PIDE and the military forces, having been one of the most important moments in the struggle for democracy in the Algarve”, describes the Portimão Chamber.

The gathering will be attended by Margarida Tengarrinha, political activist and co-organizer of the demonstration for 70 years, Teresa Mendes, councilor with the responsibility for Culture at the Portimão City Council, and José Alberto Quaresma, scientific director of Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes.

This initiative is part of the commemorations of the 160th anniversary of the birth of Manuel Teixeira Gomes, which began on the 10th of October and lasts until the 11th of December.

Despite the constraints caused by the pandemic, which forced the original program of commemorations, the Portimão City Council did not want to stop "carrying out a series of initiatives designed to honor the most illustrious natural personality of the city", which will be divided by TEMPO - Municipal Theater of Portimão, Manuel Teixeira Gomes House and Manuel Teixeira Gomes Library».

The program began with the contemporary dance show “Last”, performed by Companhia Paulo Ribeiro, and also includes a colloquium on diplomacy and literature from the 1th and 2st centuries, coordinated by Luís Filipe Castro Mendes, former Minister of Culture, as well. as the presentation of the XNUMXst volume, of the five planned, of “Complete Works by Manuel Teixeira Gomes”, coordinated by José Alberto Quaresma and Nuno Júdice, and the XNUMXnd edition of “Manuel Teixeira Gomes – Biography”, by José Alberto Quaresma, both published by the National Press.
