Minister of Environment, experts and mayors discuss "Water and Society"

The meeting is open to the entire community, via streaming transmission

A debate on “Water and Society”, organized by Algfuturo – Union for the Future of the Algarve and the University of Algarve (UAlg), takes place this Saturday, October 17, starting at 9:00 am, in Auditorium 1.5, of the Penha Campus Penha Penha of the Algarve University. The closing session will be attended by the Minister of Environment and Climate Action João Matos Fernandes.

In the first panel (9:45 am), which will focus on the “Framing and evolution of knowledge”, José Paulo Monteiro, professor at UAlg, will discuss “Water: Past, Present and Future of Uses, Management and Knowledge”.

Manuela Moreira da Silva, professor at UAlg, will speak about “Alternative Origins and Efficient Use of Water in the Current Scenario of Global Changes”, and Luís Chícharo, also professor at UAlg, will address “Water and Ecosystem Sustainability”. In the same panel, António Carmona Rodrigues, professor at Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL) will outline a perspective on “Origins, Evolution and Water Supply in the South of the Tagus”.

The second panel (11:30 am) dedicated to “Management and Use” will begin with Pedro Coelho, regional administrator of the Portuguese Environment Agency – Regional Hydrographic Administration (ARH) of the Algarve, who will present the “Water in Origins: Current Situation and Future Perspectives”. Joaquim Peres, president of Águas do Algarve, will speak on “Water for Human Consumption”. This panel will end with the presentation “Water for Agriculture”, by Pedro Valadas Monteiro, Regional Director for Agriculture and Fisheries of the Algarve. João Reis, from Algfuturo, will be the moderator of the two panels.

In the afternoon, at 14:30 pm, the third panel will begin, entitled “Agriculture: crops, advanced technologies and irrigation”, which includes the following interventions: José Carlos Tomás (Regional Directorate for Agriculture and Fisheries of the Algarve); Pedro Nascimento (Association of Sotavento Regantes), João Garcia (Association of Regantes de Silves); Helder Henriques (Association of Regantes de Alvor); José Oliveira (AlgarOrange); João Bento (Madrefruta). Francisco Piedade, director of the newspaper Região Sul will be responsible for moderation.

The last panel is scheduled for 16:15 pm, dedicated to “Tourism: public uses, accommodation, golf”. Participating in this panel will be José Carlos Rolo (mayor of Albufeira), João Fernandes (president of the Algarve Tourism Region), Custódio Moreno (president of the Portuguese Sports and Youth Institute), Elidérico Viegas (AHETA), and António Miranda (Association Portuguese from Greenkeepers). The moderation will be in charge of Hugo Rodrigues, deputy director of Sul Informação.

At 17:45 pm, João Matos Fernandes, Minister of the Environment, will preside over the closing session, which will also be attended by the President of the Chamber of Faro Rogerio Cod.
