Capacity for the Portuguese F1 GP to be reduced to 27.500 seats

Initially, around 46.000 tickets were offered for sale

The maximum capacity allowed in the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Portugal, next weekend, should be reduced to 27.500 places, Paulo Pinheiro, director of the Algarve International Circuit, told Lusa today.

“We are still awaiting the final version of the opinion of the DGS [General Directorate of Health] but, in principle, the maximum limit should be situated at 27.500 places”, revealed Paulo Pinheiro.

Initially, around 46.000 tickets were offered for sale, but, given the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic in recent weeks, that number should be substantially reduced.

“The document should reach us this Monday”, said the administrator of the Algarve racecourse.

Certainly, pawn tickets “will not be allowed”, so these seats will be distributed to other stands.

However, Paulo Pinheiro revealed that there have been “several dropouts” of supporters from abroad “who either couldn't travel or are afraid” of attending the race.

Therefore, "in principle, it will be able to accommodate" all Portuguese fans who bought a ticket, noted the official.

On Friday, the DGS had informed that it was reviewing the authorization for the presence of the public in sporting events, in particular in the Portuguese Formula 1 and MotoGP Grand Prix, admitting its reduction.

Graça Freitas, general director of Health, had warned that “the situation is worrying”, which leads the health authority to act in a “very cautious” way, adding that the presence of spectators in sports shows “is being addressed as per the zone, with the reduction that will have to exist”.

Portugal accounts for at least 2.181 deaths associated with covid-19 in 99.911 confirmed cases of infection, according to the latest bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health (DGS).

The Formula 1 Grand Prix of Portugal will be the 12th race of the 2020 World Championship and will take place between Friday and Sunday at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve, in Portimão.
