CHUA celebrates 20 years of the Intensive Care Unit of Portimão

The six professionals who have been part of the Unit's team since the 1st day were honored

“In 20 years, you've never heard so much about intensive care as in recent months. We have also never been so well prepared and equipped”, said Alexandre Baptista, director of Portimão Intensive Care Unit, referring to the pandemic and the equipment that has been arriving to equip this service with the best technology. The person in charge was speaking during the ceremony that marked the 20th anniversary of that UCI, which is being celebrated today, the 2nd of October.

In this symbolic ceremony, which began with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at the entrance to the Unit, the six professionals were also honored – four nurses, an operational assistant and a doctor – who have been part of the Unit's team since the 1st day.

Ana Castro, chairman of the Board of Directors of CHUA, highlighted the importance of marking this date, especially in the context in which we live, because “we have to highlight the professionalism and commitment of our professionals, especially in such a specific area as Intensive Care and its importance in the fight against this pandemic”.

The president of CHUA also took the opportunity to thank the support that the Municipality of Portimão, in the person of its president Isilda Gomes, has provided to the institution, namely in the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment, contributing to the increase of CHUA's responsiveness, not only in the context of the pandemic, but in the treatment of all users.

The president of ARS Algarve, Paulo Morgado, also highlighted the technical capacity of teams working in Intensive Care, recalling the importance of the creation of this Intensive Care Unit at the Hospital do Barlavento, 20 years ago.

Jorge Botelho, Secretary of State for Decentralization and Local Administration and Regional Coordinator for Combating COVID-19, publicly thanked the professionalism of the health teams in the region, the way they have been preparing to continue treating all patients, emphasizing “the importance of joining efforts, between entities – Hospital Center, Local Authorities, Civil Protection and Guardianship – which translates into more and better care for users in the region”.

Isilda Gomes, mayor of Portimão, in an emotional speech, thanked all the professionals of the Intensive Care Unit for the work developed over these two decades and especially the way they accompany patients and families in the context of critical illness.

He also addressed words of thanks to the Board of Directors for the important initiative to mark this milestone of the Service, and for the availability it has shown since the first day, to work for Health in the Algarve region.

The ceremony was also attended by the commander of the Municipal Civil Protection Service, the director of the Emergency, Urgency and Intensive Care Department, Daniel Nunez, and some of the professionals who "inaugurated" the service, namely the first director of the Service, the doctor Carlos Gloria.
