Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos selected for the European Maker and Education Consortium

By supporting schools, teachers, educators and students, Make It Open will create synergies between science, creativity, entrepreneurship and innovation.

The Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos (CCVL) was selected as the only Portuguese maker partner, of the Make it Open Project and Consortium, of the European Horizon 2020 Programme, financed by the European Commission.

Over the next three years, the CCVL will be associated with renowned scientific institutions in countries such as Israel (Bloomfield Science Museum Jerusalem), United States of America (Columbia University), Netherlands, Poland (Copernicus Science Center), United Kingdom, Belgium, for intermediary of the European Association of Museums and Science Centers – Ecsite and other European partners.

The Make It Open Project aims to apply the methodologies of the MAKER Movement in classroom contexts. This approach focuses on training children and young people through the concept get your hands dirty and addresses scientific, technological and Natural Science topics, from Biology to Engineering, passing through Mathematics and Physics.

«The Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos was selected as one of the six European partners, among the various applications from European Museums and Science Centers, to implement Maker techniques in schools, as it has a great experience of its team in Maker methodologies and in form. how they relate to formal and informal education, but equally because it has equipment and spaces dedicated to Maker “gadgets”, said Luís Azevedo Rodrigues, director of CCVL.

In addition, this Ciência Viva Center has «a strong connection and implementation in the educational community of the region, either through the development of the Curriculum Enrichment Activities that it develops, or through the implementation of the Maker activities at the Ciência Viva School, a project where 1st cycle classes spend a whole week developing activities at CCVL», added Luís Azevedo Rodrigues.

«Last March, the Maker community was called upon to produce masks for hospitals and healthcare professionals and, at that time, CCVL played an important role in the Algarve, having placed its team and professionals at the service of the community. Fortunately, and despite some difficulties and less good times as a society awaiting us, the CCVL was selected to put its experience at the service of education», explained the director.

CCVL, as a mentor of science education programs, will take programs from the MAKER Movement to schools in Lagos and neighboring towns of Portimão, Monchique, Vila do Bispo and Aljezur.

Based on a non-formal approach, school and post-school programs will be developed, involving the City of Lagos in order to guarantee their maintenance and sustainability.

CCVL will involve universities and partner Civil Society Organizations to invite everyone to collaborate. As a member of the National Network of 21 Live Science Centers, CCVL will share local and Project results globally to encourage the promotion of the initiative in various schools.

As an excellent space for families, the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos will offer special programs for parents, in order to publicize Maker education and the possible inclusion of this movement in their daily routines.
