Union of Doctors of the South Zone demands regulation of the Performance Bonus for NHS workers

Law should have been regulated by August and it did not happen

The Union of Doctors of the South Zone (SMZS), one of the unions belonging to the National Federation of Doctors (FNAM), demanded from the Government the regulation of the Performance Bonus provided for in Law No. 27-A/2020, which provides that “ During 2020, the Government assigns to all NHS professionals who, during the state of emergency, and its renewals, performed functions in a subordinate work regime in the NHS and have practiced, in that period, in a continuous and relevant manner, acts directly related to suspicious and sick people infected by COVID-19”.

The deadline for the regulation of this legislation, essential for its enforceability, expired on August 24, "without the Government fulfilling its obligations", accuses the union.

Thus, the SMZS started the application process for the regulation of the Performance Award for healthcare professionals.

That structure adds that "it will not tolerate more propagandistic measures on the part of a Government, which has shown an attitude of total disrespect towards doctors and towards the National Health Service".

“It is essential that the Government clarify which professionals are covered by the aforementioned award”, defends the Union.

«All NHS professionals have responded selflessly to ensure health care to all Portuguese during this pandemic, even though they are exposed to high risk. It will not be acceptable to discriminate against some professionals at the expense of all others”, he adds.

For the SMZS, «the recognition of the efforts of doctors over the successive decades and the increased pain and risk of the medical profession does not end with a one-off prize. The SMZS recalls the proposals presented to dignify working conditions and insists on the presence of the Minister of Health at the negotiating table».
