Faro marks European Heritage Days with theater, books and exhibition

High point will be the launch of the exhibition catalog “Manuel Martins (1667-1742): famous carver and sculptor official”

Theater, book launches, a guided visit to a historic area of ​​the city, an exhibition at the Regional Museum, the launch of another catalogue, are some of the activities chosen by Faro to participate in the European Heritage Days, which take place on the 25th, 26th and 27th of September.

The theme of this edition – “Heritage and Education” – aims to make the public aware of the importance of the relationship that education has with the various areas of art. To live up to the theme, the celebrations in Faro they begin with an activity promoted by the educational services of the Municipal Museum and the Regional Museum.

This action will take place in Horta do Ourives, this Friday, the 25th, in the morning, and aims to inform the youngsters about the origins of that farm, details of its architecture and the agricultural work that took place there.

At the end of the afternoon of the 25th, at 18:30 pm, at the Municipal Museum, the artist and physician Vicente de Brito, recently honored by the municipality on the City Day, will present his latest book, a publication that reveals his memories and impressive collection of works he has produced over the years, with his unmistakable style and which represents one of the references of contemporary Faro art.

Some of these works are part of the Municipal Museum of Faro, which has recently exhibited some of his works.

In the evening, at 21 pm, the theater company “DoisMaisUm” will present the play “Laurinda wasn't a war”, an emotional portrait of the families who see their families leave for the colonial war, always in pain until they return home healthy and saved.

The show features the participation of the group “Coral Cantate Domino” and will be presented in the former cloister of the Convento de Santo António dos Capuchos.

The meeting point is at the entrance to the Capuchin Church and the old civil jail.

This piece, which at the same time works as a guided tour of a little or no-known historical space in the city, is repeated on Saturday at the same time, with limited capacity and mandatory use of a mask.

On Saturday, the 26th, in addition to the theater play at night, an exhibition will be inaugurated at the Regional Museum, at 17 pm, with works by teacher Lídia Almeida, entitled “Retalhos”. This is an exhibition of works that reveal the artistic path and its different techniques used in painting classes.

Finally, there will be the launch of the exhibition catalog “Manuel Martins (1667-1742): official carver and famous sculptor”, presented by Professor Sandra Saldanha (Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra / CEAACP).

The work reveals not only the artistic treasures of this remarkable figure in the Algarve baroque, but also its time, the restoration work on the works on display and the results of radiological examinations on some of them.

This is another edition not to be missed, which points to the enhancement of the city's heritage and the proximity of the community to the artistic references of its territory, in a perspective of learning, knowledge and also raising awareness for its protection and dissemination.

The European Heritage Days are a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Commission, coordinated at national level by the Directorate General for Cultural Heritage.
