Tavira: Arrested firefighter suspected of setting fire to the house he shared with his mother

Man would have been drunk when he set the fire

A man who set fire to the house where he lived with his mother, in Santa Margarida, in the municipality of Tavira, this Sunday, was detained by the Judiciary Police (PJ), through its Southern Directorate.

The detainee, a firefighter by profession, is suspected of having poured gasoline "in various parts of the house, namely in his mother's bed" and of having started "by direct ignition, a fire in the house".

"These facts were allegedly committed in a context of drunkenness, in addition to a dispute that the suspect has with his mother and sister, which has already led to complaints of domestic violence and damage, due to problems with sharing due to the father's death", according to the PJ .

The 35-year-old man already had a criminal record of driving while intoxicated and will now be present for judicial questioning.

The arrest took place as part of an investigation overseen by the Public Ministry of the DIAP in Tavira.
