Municipalities of São Brás de Alportel will only pay for the garbage they produce

As the urban waste tariff is only applied to unsorted waste, the more you separate and recycle, the less you pay

Municipalities of São Brás de Alportel will start paying only for the garbage they produce, as part of the PAYT (Pay as You Throw) pilot project, which «promotes the selective disposal of waste, through the polluter pays concept».

The “PAYT – Pay only for the garbage you produce” project will cover “the Fonte da Pedra Urbanization, the Xanabus Urbanization and neighboring buildings and the Virginia de Passos Street, totaling 156 consumers” and, in a first phase, “will allow to analyze and carry out the assessment of the tariff currently in force, relating to the disposal of urban waste'.

«Each consumer/household will have an access and identification key that allows unlocking the lids of the containers used for depositing unsorted urban waste and the recycling bins where the waste will be deposited. This process will make it possible to assess the amount of waste deposited by access key», according to the City Council of São Brás de Alportel.

As the urban waste tariff “is only applied to undifferentiated waste, the more and better the consumer separates, the lower the tariff to be paid by the citizens for the waste, thus complying with the polluter pays principle”.

The project results from an application submitted by the Municipality to the Operational Program for Sustainability and Efficiency in the Use of Cohesion Fund Resources, which was approved and supported by 85%. The project has a total investment of 170.459,65 euros.

A pedagogical project with environmental concerns and which meets the Municipality's strategy for the environment and is expected to be extended soon to other areas and locations in the municipality.
