Pre-trial detention for Moroccans who destroyed equipment in a reception center

Men are part of the group that landed in Vale de Lobo in June

The 11 Moroccans who on Thursday destroyed equipment at the temporary reception center at Porto airport they will be placed in preventive detention, a source from the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) told Lusa.

According to the source, preventive detention was the coercive measure decided this Saturday for all 11 men, who are indicted for the crimes of riot, kidnapping, aggravated damage and threat and coercion to an official.

According to the SEF, these citizens on Thursday caused “material damage to doors, glass, pipes and equipment” which forced the temporary closure of the center at Porto airport.

The 11 citizens belonged to a group of 22 migrants, from North Africa, who were following a vessel intercepted by the Maritime Police, on the 15th of June, when the crew members were preparing to disembark at Praia de Vale do Lobo, in the Algarve.

The SEF explained to Lusa that 11 citizens reacted "violently" when they were notified, on Thursday, of the decision of the Court of Loulé that determined the maintenance in the temporary installation centers, for another 30 days, of all elements of the group who landed in the Algarve.

The decision of the Court of Loulé was taken "while awaiting authorization from the Moroccan authorities to carry out its removal from the national territory, in view of the existing constraints in the context of the covid-19 pandemic", explains the SEF.

“The citizens in question were, in due time, notified of the decision rendered on the requests for international protection they made, which were considered unfounded, and so currently the coercive removal process remains,” added the SEF.
