Lídia Jorge distinguished with the FIL Prize for Literature in Romance Languages ​​2020

Today, Lídia Jorge was distinguished with one of the biggest literature prizes for Latin authors, the FIL Prize for Literature in Romance Languages ​​2020, awarded by the organization of the Guadalajara International Book Fair, in Mexico City.

Therefore, stresses the Loulé City Council in a note sent to the newsrooms, «it is with immense honor and pride that the municipal executive, representing all Loulés, comes to express its joy and emotion for the news and publicly send it to the prestigious Loulé writer, better said to the world-renowned writer, Lídia Jorge, a word of congratulations for the Award, as well as of deep recognition, respect and gratitude for her work and for her thought, always up-to-date, sharp and challenging».

The local authority classifies Lídia Jorge as “a writer with a civic involvement who is a reference for our community and for our country”.

Vítor Aleixo, mayor of Loulé, considers that the FIL Prize for Literature in Romance Languages ​​2020 «is a fair recognition of a writer and great humanist who, throughout her career, has contributed to the promotion of the Portuguese language and, simultaneously , of the Latin culture in the world».

«For me, Loulé mayor, admirer and reader of the writer, it is a great happiness to have the honor, on behalf of all Loulés, to congratulate our fellow countrywoman for this distinction that ennobles us so much and gives us increased responsibility to continue working to strengthen the role of Culture in the community,” added Vítor Aleixo.

The FIL Guadalajara award for the Portuguese narrator, poet, essayist and playwright takes place on November 28th.

A Guadalajara International Book Fair it was conceived and created in 1987 by the university in that Mexican city, and today it is one of the greatest literary events at a universal level.

It has a strong local impact and a large international participation, being the largest literary event in the Spanish language and the second largest book fair in the world, after Frankfurt, Germany.

The FIL Prize for Literature in Romance Languages, created in 1991, aims to distinguish a creative work of any literary genre, and has already awarded, among others, the following writers: Nicanor Parra (1991), Nélida Piñón (1995), Rubem Fonseca (2003), António Lobo Antunes (2008), Claudio Magris (2014), Enrique Vila-Matas (2015).

Lidia Jorge she was distinguished throughout her career by several awards, including: Ricardo Malheiros Award (1980), Municipality of Lisbon Literary Award (1982, 1984), Bordalo Literature Award from Casa da Imprensa (1995, 1998), D. Dinis Award (1998), PEN Clube Português de Novelística Prize (1999), Máxima Prize for Literature (1999), Jean Monet Prize for European Literature, European Writer of the Year (2000), Grand Prize for Novel and Novel APE/DGLB (2002), Casino da Póvoa Literary Prize (2004), International Albatroz Literature Prize from the Günter Grass Foundation (2006), Luso-Spanish Art and Culture Prize (2014), Vergílio Ferreira Prize (2015) and Urbano Tavares Rodrigues Prize (2015) and the dst Literature Grand Prix (2019).

She was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Infante D. Henrique of Portugal (9 March 2005) and the distinction of Lady of the Order of Arts and Letters of France (13 April 2005).

He has a vast published work, passing through various literary styles from novels, short stories, children's literature, essays, theater, poetry and chronicles.

His first work “O Dia dos Prodígios” (1980) had an excellent acceptance and in the thirty years of its publication, the Municipality of Loulé, in 2010, dedicated a large exhibition to him, held at the Convento de Santo António.
