The construction of a new Air Resources and Civil Protection Center in Monchique has been promised for several years, but it now appears to be closer than ever. The contract was approved at the Chamber Meeting, on August 4th, and the mayor Rui André hopes to launch the public tender for its construction by the end of this year. For this, the “yes” of the Court of Auditors is missing.

In statements to the South Information, Rui André recalls that there was a «long process to acquire the land», at Semedeiro, and «the project was drawn up. Now we are ready to move forward with the construction of a modern and efficient helipad and remove the current helipad from the center of the village, which has been provisional for decades».

Even so, «the approval of the Court of Auditors is lacking», but Rui André is hoping to be able to launch the competition for the work «by the end of the year».

The work will cost around 1,5 million euros and is part of an INTERREG application – Iberian Center for Research and Fight Against Forest Fires – Portugal/Spain.

The Air Resources and Civil Protection Center will also be complemented with a Training Unit of the Fire Brigade School, something that has been registered since 2013, and will have the capacity for accommodation and overnight stays for military personnel and others, as well as being used to accommodate people and goods in situations of disaster or fire.

The construction of an Air Resources and Civil Protection Center in Monchique was announced in 2011 by the president of the Chamber Rui André.

Time passed, the work did not start and the PS opposition, after 6 years, in August 2017, he accused the mayor of having presented a “virtual project”.

At the time, Rui André assured the Sul Informação that the municipality had already acquired the land and that there was a project.

2020 could be the year of launching the public tender.
