These data from INE do not specify unemployment figures by region

The unemployment rate in Portugal rose to 7% in June, reveal data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) released this Wednesday, 29 July.

According to INE, «the unemployment rate was 7%, 1,1 percentage points more than in the previous month, 0,8 percentage points more than three months ago and 0,4 percentage points more than a year ago ».

These data from INE do not specify unemployment figures by region. In the Algarve, according to the latest data from the Employment and Vocational Training Institute (IEFP), the number of unemployed registered in May, in the employment centers of the Algarve, rose 202,4% compared to the same month last year

In these data, for June, the National Institute of Statistics says that the employed population «recorded changes of +0.1%, compared to the previous month, -3,2% compared to the three months before and -3,6% per compared to the same month of 2019'.

INE also released a rate of underutilization of work, an indicator that aggregates the “unemployed population, the underemployment of part-time workers, the inactive looking for a job but not available and the inactive available but not looking for a job”.

This rate was 15,4% in June, 0,8 percentage points more than in May, 3,0 percentage points more than 3 months ago and 2,4 percentage points more than a year ago.

INE explains that, “in contrast to what happened in previous months, the increase in the number of unemployed and underemployment of part-time workers contributed exclusively to the monthly increase in the rate of underutilization of work this month, as the number of inactive people looking for a job but not available for work and the inactive ones available but not looking for a job».

As for the value of the unemployment rate for May, INE revised it upwards to 5,9%, when provisional data spoke at 5,5%.
