New Municipal Cemetery in Portimão to have crematorium

Albufeira already has a crematorium and Faro is preparing to also have an infrastructure of these

The future Municipal Cemetery of Portimão, to be built on the Malheiro site, will have a crematorium. The proposal for concession, design, execution and exploration was approved this Wednesday, 15 July, at a chamber meeting.

The Portimão municipality decided to go ahead, simultaneously, with two procedures: that of preparing the global project for the new cemetery, already in the final adjudication phase, and that of granting the conception, construction, management, operation and conservation of the Crematorium.

The new cemetery will occupy a municipal land measuring around 47 thousand square meters and will be endowed with a wide range of solutions and features, in order to provide residents with options consistent with their convictions and free choice, including the possibility of cremation .

"Cremation is nowadays a practice considered advantageous, particularly from the health point of view, with the crematorium, with an area of 400 to 500 m2, being planned to be part of the technical-administrative building of the cemetery and have an autonomous operation," he says. the Chamber of Portimão.

In view of the specificities of this type of equipment and the restrictions in the hiring of human resources, the Chamber will assign, by public tender, the respective design, construction, management, operation and conservation to an entity that has qualifications for the exercise of funeral activities, in the terms provided for in Decree-Law 10/2015, of 16 January.

The financing of all activities that make up the concession is the responsibility of the concessionaire, who will be responsible for promoting, in accordance with the technical provisions defined by the Municipality and the applicable legislation, the preparation of studies and projects and the execution of the works covered.

The establishment of the concession is operated under a public service regime and the contract includes a financial contribution to be delivered by the concessionaire to the Municipality.

After being approved by the local authority, this proposal now goes to the Municipal Assembly, for discussion and for it to authorize the corresponding concession for a period of 30 years, making Portimão one of the Algarve cities to have a crematorium.
