Registration for the Sagres Bird Watching Festival opens tomorrow

Festival activities and spaces will be adapted according to DGS guidelines

Tomorrow, the 28th of July, registration will open for the biggest nature event in the country: the 11th Festival of Bird Watching & Nature Activities, in Sagres.

In this event, scheduled for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th of October, those interested will find dozens of opportunities to enjoy the spectacle of bird migration and discover the nature of the Western Algarve.

In addition to the bird, dolphin and even plant observation trips, there will be several day and night activities, including for the first time some webinars.

The program will be online at www.birdwatchingsagres.com and the organization recommends that you apply as soon as possible, as every year there are activities that sell out quickly.

Birds are the stars of the Festival, at this time they pass through Sagres in their thousands. You can go to Cabo de São Vicente and be dazzled by the dozens of ramparts that pass by.

Or you can go to sea, on a boat trip that allows you to see species that are difficult to see from land, such as the master soul or the Balearic Sparrow, the most endangered sea bird in Europe.

Other proposals include trips on land to observe small “adventurers” such as the yellow wagtail (this year's headliner), which replenish energy before facing the Mediterranean crossing; or the chance to get to know better the eagles and vultures that pass overhead, in an Introduction to Prey session.

Like the birds that “supply” in Sagres before heading south, nature lovers also need to maintain their energy levels.

This year, they are invited to explore sustainable ways of obtaining food, in sessions such as a workshop to get the most out of “A vegetable garden by the sea” or a guided tour of Lota de Sagres to explore where the fish we eat comes from.

In this 11th edition of the Festival, the activities don't end with the sunset. In the dark, there is the challenge of discovering the sounds of both migrating birds and bats.

There will also be an opportunity to see up close some of the 3000 species of nocturnal butterflies in our country.

This year there will also be online activities that will allow people from all over the world to enjoy this celebration of Nature and migration.

Every day of the festival, from 21 pm to 22 pm, you can watch the cycle “Women to Save the World” via internet. Other webinars will include topics as diverse as the Ria Formosa seahorses, combating environmental crime and science illustration workshops.

The Festival's activities and spaces will be adapted according to the DGS guidelines in view of the Covid-19 pandemic situation.

The Bird Watching & Nature Activities Festival is organized by the Municipality of Vila do Bispo, in partnership with the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) and the Almargem Association.

All festival news can be followed at on the festival website, on the page of Facebook,or still in Instagram.
